The Final Countdown

And so, the end is near…

Another year ticks by – and the countdown to Brexit has well and truly begun, without any real picture emerging of a post-leave world. We’re told that ‘English is Great’ by the government’s aggressive marketing of language skills in China, but that smacks of an increasingly desperate attempt to find trading partners that speak our language once we pull up the Euro drawbridge. The trouble with the strategy is that few, if any of our future business alliances will be with countries that do speak our language, whether literally or metaphorically. We need a healthy dose of humility and a clear vision of the need to follow the old adage of ‘adapt, adopt and improve’ when it comes to using our language in discussions abroad. There”s time to change the old-style approach of ‘speak English, loud and slow’, but, as with all other aspects of the negotiations in Brussels, it’s running out fast.
